‘We Had to Remove This Post’ by Hanna Bervoetes is a novella that follows a woman named Eva, who works as a content moderator for a large tech company, tasked with reviewing and removing harmful, graphic, or disturbing content from social media platforms.
Throughout the novella, Bervoets examines the effects of the gig economy and the way tech companies wield power over society, often treating workers like cogs in a machine while avoiding accountability for the broader impact of their platforms. Eva’s emotional unraveling is mirrored by the lack of recognition or support for workers like her, who are tasked with maintaining the virtual spaces that influence so much of modern life.

My Review:
I 100% believe my low rating of this book is because I came into it with different expectations. Based off the title and the cover, I thought this was going to be an internet horror regarding social media and what can and has been shared… Well I was half right.
I was disappointed when there was little to no horror aspect. It didn’t really make me feel much other than questioning who Eva is and why she is the way she is, which is usually enough for me to stay intrigued, especially when I can get some answers. I received none. It was just a letter to an attorney who had submitted a legal suit against the company she works for.
I liked that it was focused on these content moderators as I am sure it is horrible to review theses posts and I appreciate the research the author did for this book.
Overall, it was not interesting in the slightest to me. Like at all. It was such a quick read that I didn’t see a reason to DNF (Did Not Finish) it. But, it just wasn’t for me, and I wish it was.
Would I Recommend This Book?
Personally, no. It wasn’t intriguing or mind blowing and if someone is looking for a social media based horror, I can guarantee there is better. I would only recommend this if someone is trying to complete their reading goal for the year.
