My Review:Β The way my jaw dropped when I found out this wasn’t a true story and was only inspired by the Brutalist movement! The characters, story, setting, etc. felt very fleshed out and like they could be real people struggling to get back on their feet after the war.
My only “downside” about it is that it’s quite long which does typically put me off, but it had a built in intermission which I found helpful to be able to recenter and converse with Denver and our mutual friend. Like I said, I am usually put off by long movies (I’m looking at your Oppenheimer) as I have a hard time focusing, especially when the pacing is off. But I found that The Brutalist had a steady pace the entire time. And surpassingly, I didn’t get bored with the length and stayed engaged during the movie!
The only negative for me is that it was hard to tell when we had a time jump which left me confused at times. I could usually figure it out with context clues (wardrobe changes, for example), but would’ve found some sort of indicator helpful.
The film as a whole is worth the watch and am glad that Denver was so enthusiastic about seeing this. The cinematography was breath taking and I thought the script and actors were phenomenal. Also, did you know that they filmed the entire movie in 34 days!? Now THAT deserves an award on it’s own because wow!
Would I Recommend This Movie?
I would recommend this to someone who wants to watch a film not a movie. It is beautifully shot, and an interesting story. I think if you want to watch it, you should!
