Book Review: The House of My Mother by Shari Franke

Written by

Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a strict moral code while maintaining the facade of a picture perfect mother, wife, and family for the widely popular YouTube channel, 8 Passengers, which documented the day to day life of raising six children. But a much darker truth lurked beneath the surface.

My Review:

This was beautifully written and so very heartbreaking. It gives great insight into what the children, specifically Shari, experienced in the house of their mother, along with the dangers of family vloggers. The more I read, the more heartbroken I became learning the tribulations Shari went through and how she felt when the comments came through about her being a mini-Ruby.

This memoir shined light on wanting to being a people-pleaser who wants nothing more than your parents love, the loneliness of not having any friends due to your parents and the consequences of using your children for social media content. It does contains triggering content, but I don’t feel like Shari dramatizes the events one bit.

This coupled with the recent Hulu documentary “The Devil Inside The House” really opens your eyes to the horrors behind the camera.

Would I Recommend This Book?

Yes, but especially if you are interested in The 8 Passenger’s events since it is written from the oldest daughters perspective. I don’t know if someone who doesn’t know the history of 8 Passengers would get anything out of the memoir, but think it’s worth the read if you are curious!
