When I first saw that Jeremy Renner was releasing a memoir, I was curious about it. I didn’t expect the raw, deeply personal story he would share. My Next Breath is an intimate account of the horrific snowplow accident he experienced in January 2023, and everything that followed — the pain, the guilt, the healing, and the transformation.
I didn’t read this as a physical book, instead, I listened to the audiobook on Spotify (it’s free right now)! Honestly, this is the only way I’d recommend experiencing it. Hearing Renner recounting the events, the emotion in his tone, and even the audio from the 911 call — it brought the story to life in a powerful, heartbreaking way. His pain wasn’t just physical or emotional. He also carried immense guilt for what his accident put his loved ones through, and that vulnerability was deeply moving.
He shares memories from his childhood, vivid retellings of the accident, and moments of raw humanity. One emotional aspect that had me tearing up was when he was apologizing to his family — in texts, in American Sign Language, and in words. You can feel how deeply that guilt cut him. It became his mission to heal quickly. Not only for himself, but for his loved ones to start healing too.
After his recovery, Renner’s outlook on life and work shifted. He began choosing projects based not on money, but on passion and the people he truly wanted to work with. That shift felt like a quiet triumph.
Do I Recommend ‘My Next Breath’?
Is Jeremy Renner a writer? Not by a long shot, but he admits to that. But what he lacks as a writer, he makes up for with sincerity, resilience, and an inspiring message: don’t give up, even when everything in you wants to.
