‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ directed by Dean Fleischer Camp follows Marcel, a 1-inch-tall shell, living with his grandmother, Connie, the only residents of their town after their neighbors’ sudden, mysterious disappearance. When discovered by a guest amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans and a new hope of reuniting with his long-lost family.

My Thoughts

This movie was one of my favorite films this year! Denver put it on one day after we cleaned and were getting ready to relax for the night. It was raining and I think this was the perfect time for this!

It felt similar to Pixar in the visual and emotional storytelling.

Marcel and Connie are the two remaining members of their family, and you can tell the deep connection that they have. The love and care Marcel has for his Grandma is heartwarming and sweet.

Jenny Slate is such a gem! Her performance as Marcel is mesmerizing! But Isabella Rossellini as Connie really stole the show. She had so many tear-jerking moments and brought so much wisdom.

The mockumentary and found-footage style of cinematography was addicting and felt realistic.

I loved that A24 brought in Dean Fleischer-Camp to create a story about finding community and going out of your comfort zone. Although it is stylized and looks to be geared towards children, I think this is truly meant for the adults looking for a movie for their inner child.

Do I Recommend ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’?

I do! This was such a sweet movie that warmed my heart a thousand times! It was a beautiful film, full of wisdom and connection. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a childlike movie with more mature themes!
