To start off the year with a silly and goofy book was a good call from me. Who doesn’t love silly little gay vampires with cringey puns?
Plot Details
An odd married couple, Arthur and Sal are completely, totally normal. They wear sunscreen, eat garlic, and talk to the creatures of the night… 100% normal. They are ready to settle down and stay out of trouble, so they open a bed and breakfast in the wonderful town of Trident Falls, Oregon. Or it would be wonderful if it wasn’t not-so-paranormal-friendly.
Nonetheless, trouble finds them when the mayor is found deceased in their begonias with two puncture wounds. With the help of some townsfolk, Arthur and Sal will need to prove they aren’t literally out for blood by catching the killer…
My Thoughts
I received a free copy of Dead & Breakfast during a giveaway hosted by Goodreads. I am very happy to have been gifted this, as it is a very cute and cozy murder mystery.
I pretty much fell in love with Dead & Breakfast from the start. This mystery-fantasy aspect drew me in and kept me reading. I read it on the road (not when I was driving), at the gym, in bed, at dinner… wherever I could read it, I would. I found myself laughing at Sal’s jokes and grasping my heart when Sal and Arthur had a sweet moment.
The difference between this fantasy and a few others I have read is that we are given the daily life of Arthur and Sal. They aren’t blood-sucking vampires trying to find love; we are beginning in the middle of their marriage, which is a nice change.
I could relate to both Arthur and Sal as they navigate whether to assimilate or be themselves loudly. They’re gay, and vampires, and that won’t change.
Dead & Breakfast is lighthearted and filled with puns. It was wonderful to see a couple who have been together for ages come through on the other side of an argument. Sometimes you really just need some time apart.
Final Verdict

Dead & Breakfast is a funny, cozy contemporary mystery that keeps you engaged with the wit of Sal and Arthur. I would recommend this for anyone who is looking for a funny, full-of-heart fantasy.
