Plot Details

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix is a thrilling horror-comedy novel that centers on a group of women who survived brutal, slasher-style massacres—each of them the lone survivor, or “final girl,” of a notorious killing spree. If you are a fan of classic 80s and 90s horror movies, you will instantly recognize the real-world slasher inspirations woven into their backstories.

Now, decades later, these women meet in a secret, heavily guarded support group to help process the lingering trauma of their pasts and navigate a world that capitalized on their worst nightmares. The fragile safety they’ve built completely shatters when one of their own misses a meeting and turns up dead. The group quickly realizes they aren’t safe anymore; someone knows exactly who they are, and a new killer is systematically hunting down the survivors in a brand-new spree of calculated violence.

My Thoughts

I have had this book sitting on my TBR for what feels like an absolute eternity. Honestly, I hadn’t picked it up sooner simply due to a mix of limited time, dealing with a bout of reading burnout, and a little bit of hesitation over the massive amounts of hype surrounding it online. Sometimes widespread hype makes me nervous, but I am so incredibly happy to report that the hype is well-deserved!

Hendrix masterfully blends incredibly dark humor with genuine, pulse-pounding horror. What I loved most was how the narrative dives deep into themes of survival, real psychological trauma, and the deconstruction of the classic “final girl” archetype. It doesn’t just treat these women as icons; it treats them as real, deeply scarred people.

The pacing of this book is relentless. I was kept entirely on my toes the whole time, constantly guessing and feeling smugly confident that I knew exactly what was going to happen next. Spoiler alert: I absolutely didn’t. The story threw a twist at me that caused literal narrative whiplash! The further I got into the pages, the more I experienced absolute shock, paired with an incredible feeling of dread and fear. It manages to capture that claustrophobic slasher-movie energy perfectly in book form.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, this was an amazing, addictive 4-star read that completely pulled me out of my reading slump. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who has been thinking about picking it up! It is especially perfect if you love the concept of “final girls,” enjoy classic horror cinema references, and want a fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page.
