**This is your spoiler warning! I may talk about important plot points within this review, and if you would like to avoid any spoilers, I recommend reading this once you have seen Mickey 17!**

‘Mickey 17’ directed by Bong Joon Ho is about a disposable employee who is sent on a human expedition to colonize the ice world Niflheim. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.

inital first thoughts

Bong Joon Ho has done it once again! Creating a movie that leaves me thinking even after I have watched it!

When I first saw the trailer, I was extremely excited for 2 reasons. For one, it had Robert Patterson and being able to watch his pipeline from shiny vampire to serious actor has been extremely pleasing! For two, Bong Joon-ho directed one of my favorite movies of all times: ‘Parasite’.

It is also such an insanely interesting plot that I could not stop thinking about it!

the characters & my thoughts

Mickey 17 & Mickey 18

The Mickey’s are played by Robert Patterson and he gives an amazing performance as every Mickey we see on screen! Each Mickey has gone through their own experimentation which resulted in his death and rebirth. 17 is very likeable, if anything, he lacks a backbone and allows people like Timo, Kenneth Marshall and Ylfa Marshall to walk all over him. 18, however, is angry, tells it like it is, and isn’t afraid to get violent.

Nasha Barridge

Nasha is played by Naomi Ackie and is the partner of Mickey. Ackie does a good job at showing the highs and lows that she experiences when she is with both Mickey 17 and 18 as well as the determination she has to stick by Mickey’s side, no matter the cost!

Timo

Timo is portrayed by Steven Yeun and boy howdy he is an asshole! Not even a loveable asshole, just an absolute a-hole. I don’t have much to say about him, he isn’t loveable or redeemable, but he is there. And I love Steven Yeun so… I’m just glad to see him on a screen!

Kenneth Marshall

Kenneth is portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, and when I say that this man has range, I mean he has range! Every time he was on screen, I was blown away at how far Kenneth would go to get what he wanted, and… it felt like Ruffalo was taking some inspiration, and poking fun at, a certain U.S. President.

Ylfa Marshall

Ylfa is portrayed by Toni Collette and she is the wife of Kenneth Marshall. She is something else… For sure. Ylfa is just a very weird person, with a very weird husband, doing very weird things.

my final thoughts

Overall, I loved this film but I think that it is a hit or miss with the audience. It does have a lot of moving parts to it, and can be a little hard to follow, but it overall checked all of my boxes when it comes to a Bong Joon Ho film.

Robert Patterson once again blows my mind with the range he has acting wise. He is such an insanely talented man, and I am excited to continue watching him on screen!

Would I Recommend This Movie?

I would recommend it to people who enjoy Bong Joon Ho films or who have watched Parasite. It is an interesting plot, with a stellar cast and beautiful cinematography.
