My Review: Honestly… I loved this movie. I had a good time while watching, and it felt good to be in a theatre watching a Marvel movie again!
Aside from me just purely enjoying the crap out of it, I think that this was a great introduction to Sam Wilson taking up Steve’s mantel as Captain America, but with his own twist. I found that as I watched it, I didn’t miss Steve as Cap and felt proud of Sam for taking this on. Sam has big shoes to fill, and I think he’s filling them just fine!
When I first watched Endgame, I was upset that Steve was leaving and didn’t think Sam would be able to take the shield and do it justice (this was a personal bias as I wasn’t the biggest fan of Sam when he was first introduced). But… He did. I think that we are getting a new, and improved, version of Cap.
The CGI was solid, I don’t have any complaints about it, and the combat was fun to watch! One of the things that made me love the MCU was the combat, so watching Sam utilize hand to hand, the shield, and his wings kept me intrigued. They also didn’t make Sam “invincible” like some movies make superhero’s. He can be hurt. He can be killed. There is always that risk when fighting someone bigger, stronger, and faster.
The villain was not who I thought it would be. The conflict wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, as such, I was pleasantly surprised. I was intrigued that they were brining past movies (The Incredible Hulk, for instance) and creating a plot with that.
It was also nice that I didn’t feel like I had to prep heavily by watching other MCU movies, specifically ones I wasn’t interested in (cough Eternals cough). I did read an article before I watched it, which helped me understand the subplot quite a bit, but I don’t think rewatching every movie that could be referenced is necessary.
If I liked so much of it, why is it such a low rating? Well, I don’t think the script was the best and although entertaining it fell flat a few times. I think they fell flat in introducing the villain, and personally couldn’t really find much connection with him because we didn’t see him often and when he did, we weren’t really given much. It felt like Captain America: The Winter Solider but worse.
Would I Recommend This Movie?
I would, mostly if you are wanting to continue investing time into the MCU Universe. I enjoyed it, but I enjoy MCU movies that make me feel like I did at 14 watching the movies for the first time. If you have no interest in Sam Wilson as Cap, I still recommend it. If you are unsure, I still recommend it.
