‘Greenlights’ by Matthew McConaughey is a memoir of experienced, lessons he learned, and forgotten poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs, photographs and bumper stickers. It is 50 years of his graces, truths, and beauties of brutality wrapped into a book. It is a love letter. To life.

My Review: I think this is probably one of the best memoir’s I’ve ever read. I am so happy that I finally got the audiobook and was able to hear the words written by McConaughey from his own mouth.
This memoir was wonderful, insightful, and inspirational. McConaughey is a free spirit, going where life takes him, and not taking life too seriously. He learned many lessons growing up, which helped shape him into who he is today.
It is inspirational just how free spirited he is. He doesn’t take life too seriously, and does what makes his soul happy. For instance, he went from being type casted (for example, romantic comedy’s) to playing more serious and mature roles (for instance, the movie Interstellar). He decided not to go to law school (a dream of his) and instead pursued a career in the arts (acting).
He never stopped chasing that passion, even after meeting his now wife. He is a loving husband, which is evident when he speaks about Camila, his wife. She is a backbone, in a way, and made her needs and boundaries clear. She said “I (and the kids) will go everywhere with you” in regards to him traveling for acting and he said “Yes, of course!” As we young folks would say, he is whipped (cue the whipping noise).
One of the moments that sticks out to me the most is when one of Matthew’s children asked him why Camila didn’t share the same last name as him and why they weren’t married. Matthew said that it was because he wanted to, not because he had to. This specifically sticks out to me since marrying at a young age, or in general, is seen as something we have to do. We have to get married. We have to start a family. We have to do X, Y, Z to hit a specific dream that may not even be our dream. McConaughey wanted to simply want something instead of being told that he needs to do it.
I’ll leave you with one of many quotes that stuck with me:
βWe cannot fully appreciate the light without the shadows. We have to be thrown off balance to find our footing. Itβs better to jump than fall. And here I am.β Matthew McConaughey
Would I Recommend This Book?
I would, 100% recommend recommend this to anyone and everyone wishing to read this and anyone who isn’t. It has many life lessons, that I think would be valuable to anyone open to learning them. It is well written, and a hoot. I hope if you read this, that you find it of value!
