Is Kindle Unlimited Worth It? 5 Must-Read Books to Download Right Now

I don’t know how to explain the dopamine hit I get when I open my Kindle, find a book that looks incredible, and the beautiful button that says “Read For Free with Kindle Unlimited.” There is also not a dopamine hit for when I’m not a Kindle Unlimited member (because ew, Amazon). But to be honest, the KU library is vast and it is hard to find a truly remarkable story. It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack. I think that’s why I see “Read For Free” and a beautiful cover, I click “Read.” Rather than spending forty-five minutes scrolling, downloading samples, and getting bored before repeating the cycle all over again.

Maybe you’re in the reading slump boat or maybe you’re looking to maximize your subscription, either way, look no further! I’ve rounded up five of my favorite KU reads that have stayed on my mind for a bit too long. From haunting to contemporary dramas that will make you feel every emotion, here is your official digital reading list.

Note: Kindle Unlimited’s catalog changes regularly, so availability may differ from when this post was published.

The Reading List (5 Must-Read KU Gems)

1. Cruelty Free

  • The Vibe: sharp, unsettling, visceral, and entirely unforgettable.
  • My Take: Be honest… Should I STOP recommending this book?! It is honestly my absolute favorite read of 2026, and I will not apologize that it has become my entire reading personality. If you love stories with unhinged and complex female main characters and a plot that leaves you staring blankly at the wall after the final page, stop what you’re doing and download this immediately. It is brilliant, chaotic, and everything I want out of a contemporary fiction.

2. Picking Peaches by Ansley B Calloway

  • The Vibe: sun-soaked nostalgia, small-town dynamics, and deep emotional pull
  • My Take: Reading this feels like a warm summer afternoon spent on a porch with an iced tea (although, I don’t like tea). Calloway has an incredible way of capturing relationships that feel messy, beautiful, and completely human. It’s the perfect blend of lighthearted charm and genuine emotional depth. If you need a book that feels like a comfort blanket but still leaves you turning pages past midnight, this is the one.

3. The Devil and Mrs. Davenport by Paulette Kennedy

  • The Vibe: gothic suspense, historical dread, and haunting psychological layers
  • My Take: Paulette Kennedy is an absolute master of atmosphere. This book is dripping with historical detail and a slowly creeping sense of psychological tension that gives you literal chills. It explores dark themes, family secrets, and societal constraints in a way that feels incredibly gripping. If you’re a fan of thrillers that rely heavily on dread and complex historical settings rather than cheap jump scares, you will devour this.

4. The Color of Blood by Mona Kabbani

  • The Vibe: intense horror, emotional devastation, American Psycho-esque and dark, poetic prose
  • My Take: Word of warning: this book is not for the faint of heart, but oh my goodness, Kabbani’s writing is stunning. It’s raw, visceral, and deeply emotional. It takes look at grief, trauma, and horror, spinning them into a dark literary web that completely grabs you by the throat. It’s an absolute masterpiece of dark fiction that proves Kindle Unlimited houses some of the most daring indie voices in the horror community.

5. Call It What You Want by Alissa DeRogatis

  • The Vibe: 20-something transparency, modern relationship exhaustion, and intense relatability
  • My Take: This book felt like a personal attack in the best way possible. DeRogatis perfectly captures the agonizingly specific experience of navigating romance, situation-ships, and self-worth in your twenties. It’s filled with conversational, devastatingly honest observations about what it means to love someone when everything feels temporary. If you’ve ever sat on your bedroom floor over-analyzing a text message or nursing a broken heart, this book will speak directly to your soul
